Connect Samsung Galaxy S Mobile with Kies on your PC - The MTP Error
90I just got my new Samsung Galaxy S and have finally defeated the MTP device driver error and CDC driver error! I am now connected to Kies. I can't wait to start using this beast! It's arguably one of the most powerful smart phones in existence thanks to its 4 inch super AMOLED screen, 1GHz processor with tweaked instruction sets and unrivalled graphics performance. However, it and/or the software PC suite appears to have a major flaw...
Connecting it to my PC through Samsung Kies software is a pain the proverbial donkey. A quick google of the issues reveals that I am not the only one by a long shot. I'm using 64 bit Vista (x64) but I suspect the method I used to get connected may work with 32bit (x86) too. At least people on message boards seem to be universally complaining about the same thing.
At this point I would like to say, this may not help you. There are a number of different versions of the same phone out there and thousands if not more pc, mac and other computer setups. Before you faff around with drivers, have you tried:
1. upgrading to the latest version of kies.
2. upgrading your version of .net (an MS Windows component) to the latest from the Microsoft website.
3. trying a different usb port. The SGS seems very sensitive to voltage and different usb ports around your computer supply fractionally different voltages.
In short, when I first connected the phone to my PC, I plugged in the Phone to the PC USB port and after twiddling thumbs for a while the PC tells me that the MTP device driver has failed. I assumed this was just going to be a driver issue, updated Kies to the latest version and tried again. Same result. Next I tried connecting the Phone in USB debugging mode. SUCCESS! Connection established... "Please turn off USB debugging mode, Kies does not support connection in this mode" followed by being swiftly booted by Kies. Not only that but there appeared to be no sign of the phone in Windows explorer either.
The next step was to open device manager on the PC. There was the MTP device, sure enough displaying an error. The usual step here is to right click and hit update drivers. This I duly did and was rewarded by a big fat nothing. It checked but then told me I was using the latest drivers already! Clearly not, because they weren't working!
Sorting the Issue
The next and final option I use, the one that finally worked and I probably should have gone for right at the start was to manually get the right driver and instruct the device manager where to find said driver and hopefully get the whole damned mess sorted. I suppose I could've just used the micro SD card to transfer everything, but pulling it out of the phone every time was going to be a major pain, not to mention not good for the card so I was determined to sort the issue.
MTP ERROR
- After a bit of searching, (Google again) I finally found the right driver here:
- x64 (64bit) version: http://drivers.softpedia.com/progDownload/Samsung-Galaxy-S-USB-Driver-for-Windows-x64-Download-96693.html
- x86 (32bit) version: http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/MOBILES/Samsung/Samsung-Galaxy-S-USB-Driver-for-Windows-x86.shtml
- This got me a zip file which I scanned with an AV (don't forget to do this!) and then unzipped to a folder I knew the location of (make sure its easy to find!!).
- (Update courtesy of Tim) The x86 link gets you an exe file. This can be unpacked/"unzipped with 7zip freeware in exactly the same way as a zip file. Whether the drivers then work as the x64 does, I'm needing to check (watch this space).
- Navigate to device manager (control panel ->Device Manager or Administrative tools -> computer management -> device manager)
- Navigate to "portable devices" or "MTP" in device manager, whichever one shows up with the error. There will probably be a little yellow error triangle on your device that has the problem.
- Right clicking on the faulty MTP device in device manager and hitting "update driver software" gave me the option of searching automatically and browsing my computer manually. Search automatically had already failed so I hit browse my computer for driver software - the manual way*
- I navigated to the folder I had unzipped the drivers into, ticked include subfolders and hit OK.
This time categorical success! It loaded the drivers and indicated my I9000 (Galaxy S) device was connected... or not.
Note: I realise that it can sometimes be difficult to navigate through device manager to the manual update point. The following may help if manual updating is not immediately obvious:
Right click on the MTP device, click properties, navigate to the driver tab on the window that pops up, click update driver, if a window pops up that says "can windows connect to windows update to search for software?" click "no, not this time and hit next, then tick "install from a list or specific location", Then tick "search for the best driver in these locations" untick search removable media and tick "include this location in the search" Then hit "browse" and find the folder where you unzipped the drivers you downloaded earlier. Hopefully you will then be able to press "OK" when you have found the right folder although this is very temperamental. When you have done this, hit "next" and the computer should do the rest.
*******************************************************************************************************
Update courtesy of Alesmine 26/10/10: A thread (http://www.pocketpc.ch/samsung-galaxy-s-root-rom/100413-download-samsung-usb-treiber-ohne-kies-nps-flashen-odin.html) has suggested that the specific driver folder for Samsung phones is the "16_Shrewsbury" folder. If you cannot select the parent folder (i.e. the folder that you unzip the drivers into) try selecting the .inf files within the 16_Shrewsbury folder. There are 5 .inf files and 5 .cat files as well as 2 folders. You may have to select the .inf files one at a time and repeat the procedure for the other 4.
********************************************************************************************************
CDC ERROR
Up popped issue number two. cdc abstract control model drivers missing: load from cd. Well I didn't have a cd and a browse of google gave me nothing, updating this new issue automatically gave me nothing and Windows knew nothing. Dead End.
In desperation I repeated the right click in device manager. Browsed manually to the same driver folder as for the MTP device, hit ok and...problem sorted!! device connected, showing up perfectly in Kies (may it rot) and on Windows explorer. I am connected and music is flowing. I have four movies on the phone and all that real estate of screen is a joy to behold!
- Don't forget that you need to set the phone in Samsung Kies mode on the select USB mode. If this doesn't come up on the phone when you plug it in, unplug the phone, on the phone itself go to: applications -> settings -> About Phone -> USB Settings -> Samsung Kies and then replug the phone in. This USB setting can also be used for the mass storage mode simply by selecting mass storage instead. Location for this setting may have changed on later phones. Please also see applications -> settings ->wireless and networking ->USB Settings
I'm not a religious person but blessings heaped on whomever put that driver package together. I'm not guaranteeing it'll work for you but maybe it's worth a shot. Enjoy the phone!!

Hi,
How and where does the 'MTP device' show up on the device manager?
I am having the same issue with vista 32 bits .Mobile screen shows that device is connected If we open my computer than it is there but on Kies screen it is not there. What else it says connectin device for hours & hours any solution?Pl
Reetika I think I am having the same issue as you. My device is no longer showing up. Yesterday it showed up and the driver was installed - but still didn't want to work. So I reinstalled the driver in Kies... But now it won't show up in the device manager or in the list of devices to safely remove...
Thanks Lymond .When I first connected my device the installation was complete & as asked by you I opened the device manager & on MTP I checked for update it showed that it is upto date,I am not very knowledgable about computers but this is what I could have tried. Moreover when I connect my device ,on Mobile screen it shows that it is connected with a usb icon But on Kies screen on lap top [WINDOW VISTA HOME PREMIUM] on right side of screen it shows 'connecting the device' please wait.So any other haelp please.
Thanks a lot
When i went to the softpedia link i got an exe file and not a zip file. installing the exe file didn't work and if i unzip the exe file and let device manager search it it finds nothing. Am i doing something wrong?
Hi Lymond,
Work exactly as you wrote (Win 7). Thanks, this saved me a lot of trouble and research.
Thanks again!
Jeroen
Thanks for your troubleshooting.
hello Lymond, I am running xp32b, after unzip drivers, I have several folder that contains inf. files.
What is the correct folder?
for me this solution is not good. although in device manager I can see the driver problem, I search in every subfolder of drivers archive but nothing, no driver is accepted...do you know the exact file name of driver?
Thankyou
hello, thanxs for reply.
This problem seems to be a normal driver installation, as seen hundred times. I cannot select whole parent dir; I have selected each subfolders; driver installation starts [each subd contains inf. files] and after few seconds stops because it recognize wrong lines on driver. Maybe the inf. files are very similar to right one except for small details that are detected. So, on device manager I still have tht yellow marker....
I have extract all files in one folder without any subdir, let windows search the correct driver but nothing happen, always same error: inf file contains an invalid section related to a service installation [translated from ita].
YYAHOOOOO!
Thankyou so much. after install this: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=71641&/umdf.exe as you suggest, then a simply automatic search on driver update tab has solved.
It was a windows problem on a feature used by samsung.
Thanx again
hello lymond.
I'm using galaxy S on vista 32.
At first i connected by mass storage, and everything worked fine. 2 days later i wanted to connect again, and windows started installing drivers for unrecognized station.
After this i don't see my phone anywhere, no icon in system tray, not in explorer nowhere. I tried downloading the driver again, it did not work. Then i downloaded kies but that also did not work. When i go to device manager there is no error showing up anywhere. But also there is no MTP in the list neither is there a portable device.
The problem is on my laptop and not on the phone, because i had the same problem with the galaxy S of my girlfriend
Solved my problem.
Reinstalled the drivers, then reinstalled and updated Kies.
Then i connected the usb cable to my pc (not the phone just the cable) turned off my phone, then connected and started the phone. Then it automatically turns in mass storage mode, installs some drivers. Then i reconnected using Kies mode on phone, it installed some more drivers and now it works great.
Think this also might fix Joe's problem since i had the same thing with the phone not showing anywhere, not even in safely remove.
Lymond, I have another problem.
although phone is well connected with PC via kies, a kies crash occur when try to syncronize outlook contacts with: Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {046C184F-2188-4C99-A95A-9C0DCDC19050} failed due to the following error: 80040154.
searching the web seems to be an issue regarding a component registration, so I install Sync Framework 2 but nothing happen.
Any ideas?
Thankyou again
Alesmine,
search for "046C184F-2188-4C99-A95A-9C0DCDC19050" in your register to make sure it's registered.
Also make sure you have the 32 bit version.
browsing some forums showed me a lot of people have the problem you have, because they use the 64 bit version when they need the 32 bit.
Thankyou Thijs, I open regedit, search for 046C184F-2188-4C99-A95A-9C0DCDC19050 but no result.
I have 32bit ver. and already try this search.
I don't know how to register it manually, as some people suggest to do.
maybe I should only add this key to registry? Where?
Thankyou
Hello,
I am trying to back up and install the new firmware available for the phone. My device connects but i cannot find anywhere how to back everything up.
Can you help?
Thanks
thanx a lot. took a while to figure out your instrs but they work.
Hi guys,
Forgive me for being a total n00b but which drivers do I need to download? I have the zip file listed in Lymonds bulletpoints, tho am faced with 21 different folders plus extras at the bottom? Can any one point me in the right direction...im crap with computers!
Hey Lymond, thanks for this great how-to
one question,
when i'm in the device manager and i chose to update the mtp driver with this one i'd downloaded it tells me its allready up to date :S
Can you help me
Sorry for my bad english
Catherine, Enrico, Lymond,
in this site you can find usb drivers again, method for backup, how to fix gps bug and root phone:
http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?th
About myself, I still have the problem on how to sync. outlook PC contacts with galaxy
Yeah, I read something about; I don't want to load my contacts to the net due to privacy; as I read there will be this month an update to froyo, I wait for it, maybe they will release a kies update too. Simply I prefer to wait a little bit more.....
Hi,
thanks for giving me hope. I had tried most of this myself, but the key for me to getting the drivers installed was to re-boot the phone after each one got installed - yes I did have to re-install the drivers (in my case 64-bit), but I did not have to re-boot my computer. Again, I think the mantra is to go back to Win98 days and REBOOT THE PHONE after each driver takes... I've got to say I'm very impressed with Kies, though - on the G1, we were on our own.
Frojo update should be available on 23 sept., as described here http://www.tuttoandroid.net/news/android-froyo-per hope it fix all bugs...
Thanks for the fix. I was able to solve my problem with the following link http://arvindgaba.com/computer/samsung-galaxy-s/mt Thanks again.
Hey Lymond,
where will I find the MTP driver.
It happened: after a kies reinstall outlook sync is ok.
Don't know why, but that is.
VERY IMPORTANT, please spread this info:
for a lot of Galaxy S, connection problems where windows won't reconize the phone even with the drivers. Make sure you have it plugged into a MAIN MOBO USB PORT. (My assumption is that this phone draws a lot of power b/c it assumes its charging so don't assume that any type of Hub or extension or random USB port on your keyboard or monitor will work.)
Hope this helps spread the word! I have yet to have a problem on any version of windows now, and even got my apps loaded easily.
Hi, i followed you tutorial, and ive got to say im so rubbish at computers etc i simply dont know whats going on. So please help me. First of i installed your MTP file and once downloaded i unzipped to decktop i then found the MTP device with the yellow triangle near it and right clicked, updated the drivers by manually locating the WHOLE file i unziped, to i clikc "USB drivers" file. It then loaded, and came up with. "the best driver software for your device is already installed". And still the problem persists :(
Hello, Josh
have you tried, in the same session if other usb devices I have solved [for Win XP, 32 bit] by installing this: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=71641&/umdf.exe , as suggested by Lymond. But I am not so expert, maybe the right procedure is to uninstall drivers, install microsoft update then reinstall drivers.
Hello, Josh sorry for mistake on first line, don't consider "have you tried, in the same session if other usb devices".
Strange, I have kies version1.5.1.10074.2, and no updates found.
From kies, go to Samsung apps, it tells you to update kies version. Follow procedure, now I have 1.5.1.10074.45
Cannot tell what changed.
yeah sorry, im running windows 7 64bit, ive tryed the documents method but its no different. Ive got it workign so i can trasfer files in mass storage mode, by mounting the external SD card. And thats all i really needed. But i would like Kies working, it works fine on my win Xp computer. The same problem occurs "drivers already up to date" , thanks
I had the same problem trying to load the Kies and couldn't get it to work but i found that all i have to do is plug the usb in to the phone and computer and press - mount.
To find the mount button just swipe down from the top of the screen after you make the connection, then once you press mount, the Samsung files should appear on your computer.
Nothing, froyo will be released at the end of october, there is a beta froyo rom instead. See here: http://www.tuttoandroid.net/android/galaxy-s-nuova
I am very disappointed, I mean, the phone in itself is ok, but is it normal that Samsung markets one of his flagships with such a major flaw and no help whatsoever on their site?
is it normal that after giving them around 500$ then I must dig the Internet to find a solution to such a "very bizarre and very peculiar" need as connecting the phone to the PC?
I am not happy at all...
I have the samsung Fascinate and when i connect it to Kies, it states the the device is not supported... anyone know if this phone will ever work with Kies?
Did not work for me. Only said I already have the latest drivers... and where do I find the CDC in the list? Is it a USB thing?
LYMOND - YOU ARE A PURE GENIUS. I CAN'T THANK YOU ENOUGH. I DID EXACTLY WHAT YOUR INSTRUCTIONS STATED AND HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEMS AND OMG !!! I LOVE KIES.
hey.
I have tried all the things that u had mentioned.
But couldn't connect yet..
I have a few doubts i'd be really glad if you could help out with these.
1stly how do i confirm whether my OS is a 32 or 64 bit, for re-installation of drivers.I have downloaded and tried with both though, but to now avail.
I am using XP-SP2-2002 version.
2ndly : i cant access the sd card even in mass storage mode. The "my computer" just shows two sep. drives but when i click on those it says 'please insert disk in E:/'
but yes atleast Kies detects the phone in mass storage mode and prompts a message on top right corner "not the correct mode, please disconnect and reconnect in samsung kies mode"... that's the only solace, atleast the device is detected.
Further on connecting in samsung Kies mode the error shown is MTP...
Also while installing the driver manually from an unzipped folder I could'nt locate the exact file which is specific to the MTP device, since i can not select the entire parent folder..any help on that please(on the comments posted here too i have seen many having this problem)!!
and not to mention my phone is not showing the option of USB debug mode.
It was initially there..but i guess its been missing since i once tried driver re-installation or may be driver-rollback.
Please Help, It has already been 3 weeks and i am yet to figure out how to unlock the full potential of this "otherwise-so-awesome" phone..
Please ...
and if anyone is in India could you please give me your phone no.
Thanks in advance.
hey Lymond
Ok i have partial success.
1: my system has a 32 bit OS.
2: I uninstalled the Kies completely.
then tried connection using the mass storage mode...n for the 1st time i can see the drives successfully mounted and i can easily browse through the folders.
Now looking forward to install Kies again and this time in the exact similar manner this blog suggests..
Thanx a ton man..
But yeah the ultimate victory over the bugs of Samsung is yet to be tasted!!
cheers man
\m/
Dear Lymond~@!
Thanks a BILLION! You don't know how much i appreciate your input on this sucky kies. Especially after i updated their 2.1 update 1 with baseband version I9000DXJG4. I failed to connect the phone completely.
I guess we have to "properly" unmount the SD card and can't be done abruptly or else, face the wrath of unsuccessfully connecting ur phone to pc. Grrr
Pray tell that if (a big IF) Samsung to finally release the Froyo update, it won't have to go thru Kies. Seriously. It failed to connect. I just update my files using Mass Storage and worked a charm.
Wonder why Samsung keep silence about this vital firmware upgrade?! Arghh! Hate it. Everyone is going Gingerbread and we're still stuck with froyo update!
Thanks a bunch dude!
Hi Guys
Well I have tried everything on this forum/Hub and others (i've deleted long extensions and don't have external SD inserted) and windows (32bit Vista) now recognises the MTP and i have no CDC or other errors but yet in the Kies mode my Galaxy S is not connecting! AAAAAAARGH HELP!
hey, i can't get mine to connect through bluetooth or through my wireless network at home? my husband's does, but not mine. am i missing the point somewhere along the way? thanks :)
Francesca, connect the phone via bluetooth it's easy as it seems. Simply activate BT and make phone visible. Then pairing with pc as any other BT device.
I haven't had any problem with this.
I never connect it via wi-fi yet, cannot tell nothing about
Thank you soo much!! It would have taken me ages without your help!!
I'd lile to thanks Alesmine for his help. I finally sorted out the issue with MTP driver using that file from Microsoft.
Thanks again alesmine for your help.
Frojo update:
It is a Frojoke....
Hi,
Thanks for all the tips, but I'm still stuck in "connecting to device" in KIES.
There is not "yellow triangle" on the device.
Everything else seems to be working, I can see the device in Explorer, etc
Any help will be appreciated.
Windows XP 32bit
Kies V 1.5.3 10093_31
Hi Lymond, I have been getting the "connecting the device please wait" for my samsung galaxy S. So i tried to use your steps to help solve the problem. Upon clicking the "browse my computer for device software" option in device manager, there seems to be another option called "let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer". I tried both but nothing seems to happen when i click next, it just says that my device is up to date(only happens when i choose to ignore the second option).
If i choose to go with the "let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer", it will start an installation. It took very long and i left it on for about 3 hours and when i return to check on it, my computer gave me the blue screen of death! Luckly nothings wrong with my computer and phone, just that my phone was very hot.. I am running on windows 7 64bit. Please tell me what i did wrong, i would really like to get my phone updated to the latest build. Thx alot! Btw, was it correct to install the folder from the zip called USB drivers???
It works on mass storage mode and yes i did set it to kies mode. There was the yellow triangle thingy on the device manager so yea.. This problem started after the new update for kies, it works fine the version before.
Now my phone keeps flickering from connect to home screen whenever i connect with kies.
Hi Lymond,
Thanks for your feedback.
The phone is in Kies mode.
But I think I have found the error. I installed KIES on my wife's home PC (windows XP 32 bit SP3) and connected the phone, it worked first time, no problems at all. At work we still have SP2, so when they eventually install SP3 I will be able to confirm that that was the issue.
Firstly, Thank you for your detailed step-by-step method of solving this painful problem. It worked for the first time, but insisted to keep us suffering in the second connection. Simply, without more disappointments, I reinstalled the .exe file (for 32 bit) and it worked again. I'll do the same every time it stops till Samsung solves this problem.
Many thanks for your support again.
Hi, this is extremely useful. I'm glad that you have managed to connect to Kies.
Frojo is at the door
Samsung, on its official site dedicated to developers, has released the same day two curious zip appointed JPM and JP6 and contain within the source code for Android 2.2 Froyo Samsung Galaxy S.
Surely in a few days frojo will be released through the official update Samsung Kies.
If you want, the zip file is here:
go to mobile tab and scroll down to GT-I9000.
Fingers crossed!!
Thanks for the tips!
Frojo should be arrived.
I have the problem that kies indicate that my phone does not require firmware upgrade.
Please check through kies and let me know if:
-my information on frojo release are wrong.
-or I have problems on frojo update.
Thanx
Hey Lymond, tks for the info that u put up, but one thing is that when i downloaded and extracted the file from softperia, I get 21 different folders some of them even symbian, which is is ment to be used for Galaxy S International, btw I have windows xp sp2 32bit. Thanks
Hello Mr,Lymond
I have the same problem that you had with the galaxy MTP that you wrote about in this link
http://hubpages.com/hub/How-to-Connect-Samsung-Gal
after trying everything your article was the last option for me and I was hopping for it to work, I'm using windows 7, and I tried to do what you just said ,, but when I try to update the MTP, windows refuses and says that windows has determined that the driver is up to date and its the best ,, I can't replace it with the one you wrote , I don't know what to do , this is driving me crazy
hope hearing from you to save me
Mansoor
Hi all,
if you have trouble to connect to samsung Kies (mtp device driver does not install)
this was the reaason in my case:
when there are files on the sd card that have longer file names then 16 caracters kies will hang on the MTP device
delete those files and it will connect.
in my case i connected with mass storage mode and found in andriod/data com.seesmic longer file names i deleted the whole directory and everything connects perfectly
Rayhouse,
I have already tried that using an utility someone created that searched for files with longer than 16 chrts, it came up as two thumbnails for my pictures folder in my H:// but still does not work for some reason, God I wish samsung would have just built in an OVA update :@
Lymond mate,
Thanks for all your help. I will visit my brother these days and try to run it on his windows 7 pc, will c if that makes a difference.
Hi, guys, I have Galaxy S with Tmobile, and it works just perfect!
...I cannot sync outlook contacts anymore with kies 1.5.3.10093_31...
I cannot install the USB MTP drivers as well. As Josh I too get the messege "The best driver software for your device is already installed" when I direct it to the driver folder. Is there no way to force windows to install drivers?
Hi, your guide gave me the right drivers and this helps me put some files on my phone, but i still have the endless waiting for the device.
I have windows 7 x64. I have got the latest update of kies. At first the yellow triangle showed up in the device manager but the right driver fixed this. Also the galaxy s is shown under USB controllers. I never found what you called the CDC, so maby the problem is in this. It also doenst show under disconnect safely...
I already removed all >16 chars files from my phone and my driver.
I really hope you can help me, this is the most annoying thing i ever had with any piece of technology.
Hey Gerben, when you say "latest version" - what's the version?
I was having trouble with mine yesterday - the version of Kies that came with the phone on 2 mini CDs was totally useless (I think it was version 1.5.1.10067 or something similar??).
I then downloaded a slightly newer one from the Samsung (AU) site: v1.5.1.10083, this DID connect to my phone and it no longer crashed - BUT it was still flaky.
I then read about v1.5.3 in some forum post, which is available here:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Telephony-SM
it was apparently released yesterday... Anyway, I uninstalled the previous version, and this one installed smooth and fast (compared to the previous two) - connected first go (though a little longer the first time - maybe due to my extra 8GB microSD full of music), but everything works great now.
Of course Samsung Apps doesn't support the SGS, but it's all working correctly now - even the Kies update (under settings), now checks for updates and says there's no updates available - it never did anything before for me... Although Froyo's not available for me (AU) yet :(
And I can't be bothered doing the reg hack to force it... yet... since it could be any day now... but if after a week or so we still don't get it, I'm just gonna have to force the 2.2 update ;)
Oh yeah, I'm on Win7 x64 (man I miss XP! been on Win7 for 11 months now, and the more I use it the more I dislike it :( USB sucks on 7 among so many other things).
Sorry, in all my raving, I forgot to mention - my initial problem, wasn't that the SGS drivers weren't working... they installed without a hitch - no error - no yellow triangle etc - it showed up as I9000 in "My Computer" and the screen of the SGS (after choosing to connect with Kies) said "connected".
But Kies itself just sat there trying to connect forever but never would.
What made it finally connect - not sure it's what actually fixed it or whether it was just coincidence, but I disconnected the USB, reconnected, but this time chose to connect as USB Mass Storage, mounted the device, viewed the files in explorer... then unmounted and disconnected.
Then when I reconnected and chose to connect with Kies again - loaded Kies... and after a few seconds it connected no problem...
Of course then I ran into the problems with the first two versions of Kies bugginess, (ie. Samsung Apps endlessly wanting to update but not actually doing any update - update under settings not doing anything - import contacts from csv crashing - firmware update not appearing to act quite right) all of which appears to be fixed with 1.5.3
not sure that helps though...
Yeah, thankyou ifx, I use kies 1.5.3.10093_31, and as you say, update under settings not doing anything - import contacts from outlook crashing - firmware update not appearing to act quite right, so I have installed this new and unknown for me 1.5.3.10093_82.
Install , phone immediately detected and connected, SOLVED OUTLOOK SYNC. all seems to work on this version.
This is a great hub, very interesting!
Yes, seems to be all ok, can't believe it! Seems little bit quicker too....
Lymond, do you know if outlook sync can be made automatically once connected? Maybe by changing some values on kies files? I already try to look into some config files but nothing.
I had the same problem "Android MTP" error and Kies (1.5.3.10093) wouldn't want to connect to my Galaxy S.
I've sent a couple of emails to the support but I realized they didn't even know what they're talking about.
They asked me to try the setup on a different computer.
I thought it was too expensive to buy a new computer to use my new phone ;-)
I've managed to make it work right now, on my Win XP sp3 32bit.
What I've done is I've downloaded Win Media Player 11 (as someone suggested) unzipped the file and executed the setup of the "umdf.exe".
I didn't restart my PC.
At the end of the setup I've tried to connect my phone but I had the same problem.
I've downloaded the "Samsung Galaxy S USB Driver for Windows x86"
http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/MOBILES/Samsung/S
and unzipped the exe.
I opened the device manager and updated the "Android MTP" driver (the one with the exclamation mark).
Since Win Xp doesn't allow to scan the whole tree, I choose the first folder "01_Simmental".
At the end of the setup everything was fine.
Now I can use my Kies.
I had tried to update the update the drivers before but I had the same problem cause, apparently, there was a problem
with an INF file.
So I guess you have to install the UMDF before or, at least, check if this service is installed and working on your PC:
Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework.
I hope this helps.
Alberto
i too have version 1.5.3.10093_82 and it is still not working...
I've read loads of blogs and forums and everyone has had different problems.
For what I can understand the problem with Windows Xp (I guess Seven is another matter) is the tight dependency with "Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework" service.
I din't have it ... and I don't know why, cause, apparently, it must be a Window Media Player component.
Since I don't like to keep unused services running on my PC, I've put it on manual and I've seen that Kies doesn't connect if this service is not running.
I've exchanged a few emails with the support here in the Uk and I've told them what I was doing and that I was installing "Samsung Galaxy S USB Driver for Windows x86".
They advised me not to do it, but I've told them I did it, anyway, and it worked.
Maybe they will put together a new setup which can solve these issues.
Alberto
I have tried everything I have read on forums and other places with out any luck the new versions of Kies did not fix my MTP driver problems and I already have umdf.exe installed, no matter what I did I can not get my Galaxy S to connect to any pc (windows 7, XP SP2) I simple have given up until Samsung decides to release a stable software that will connect seamlessly with my phone.
We might not be fans of Apple but you have to admit it, as shitty as iTunes for Windows is I have never had troubles connecting my old iPods to update with it.
I also had previously a Nokia N95 8gb and the Nokia software was top notch when it came down for updates or anything else.
Samsung Keis has to be the worst software I have came across in my life, plagued by so many problems it is a joke to be released for the end users.
Sorry for ranting and complaining, I know I will not achieve anything by doing so but maybe Samsung can see how many people actually are effected by their software and might decide to improve it or implement OVA update hopefully in the future versions.
My experiences up until now with my Galaxy S, have not been the most positive and I am starting to doubt whether I had made the right decision in purchasing it over the iPhone4, I love my phone but such software issues(Android & Kies) really ruin the whole concept of integrated software system. Hopefully by the time Froyo (delayed again until November) gets released we might have a stable version of Kies that connects to the Galaxy S without issues.
Tain
Yeah, after more than 500€, kies should manage a coffee usb heater too, with a message on the phone that is ready to drink!
For those that don't know that there's a kies alternative, try this:
http://www.fjsoft.at/en/downloads.php
The phone must be in USB debug mode: Menu/Settings/Applications/Development/Debugging USB: Checked.
Maybe this thread is not the right place for this, but
as this software does not install any driver, for those who have the doubt if trouble is on drivers or kies itself, may help.
Oh, Lymond, it has automatic sync with outlook.
Hey Lymond, I have tried un-installing and reinstalling the drivers, alas nothing helped the same troubles as usual. Mind it I work for a software company and I have seen my fair share of bad software but so far Kies trumps them all by far.
As Alesmine said for a phone that is premium cost and high end this, the last thing we should have worried about it making it connect to any pc.
Btw Alesmine I will try the software that you have mentioned, but does it handle software updates as Kies? I know the only other way to update it is to root it first and then use Odin to flash with Froyo, but I do not want to root my phone as I am scared it might brick it even with some of my tech background a bricked phone is a brick, and I think mine has the 3 button recovery mode disabled so no hardware way to reboot the phone afterwards.
Hopefully someone will find a way to implement a one way fix to finally get Kies working...
Tain, for what I see, that software [MPE] "only" manage phone with pc, by sync contacts, agenda, pics, browse files and so on.
It comes without drivers and cannot update phone firmware, I guess this is a feature holded by Samsung.
But if phone is seen by pc and kies doesn't work, then you can solve with this, waiting for a funktional kies release.
If a driver problem, as Lymond already suggest, if nothing work at first attempt, it's not a bad idea to uninstall all kies with drivers, well clean with eg. ccleaner, maybe update [if not yet done] basic windows components like IE or media player and restart again with the logical above suggestions. I am not so expert on these things, but I think it's a luky trick to guess what combination of windows component work bad with phone driver.
For win 7 64 bit, I have found this page with drivers and instructions to install, read till the end.
I haven't test it because I am running xp32.
....and for xp32 sp3 I have these: http://rapidshare.com/files/389572101/SAMSUNG_ADB_
I read here http://www.fjsoft.at/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10096&h
that these drivers may solve.
A brave can test them?
I' m not afraid to test, but maybe I can acheive a false positive result, because my system is already ok :-)
Dude, you are AWESOME!
I have to say one thing - I cannot stress enough, when plugging in the USB cable - plug it into the USB ports on the BACK OF YOUR PC! It just doesn't work when plugged into the front USB as what happened on my Medion PC.
Samsung really need to sort this problem out - I will buying HTC again once my contract has run out!
Thanks again Lymond - I could kiss you! (Okay, maybe that is pushing it slightly!) :)
Great hub and I liked it.
hi thank u man,u made up my samsung galaxy s.
Like your hub
Thanks for such a useful information.!
Hey Lymond
there are only good comments, maybe problems are ended?
I am happy now, kies works, MPS too, contacts sync, no usb troubles....
this is great, thank you for sharing!
Hi Lymond,
Just bought the Samsung Galaxy S. I love the phone. I had a few nights of playing around install/re-install, reboots and the works to get XP to successfully connect with the Galaxy .....
Your steps worked like a beauty. Phone connects. I am happy and I want to say thank you for taking the time to post this info on the web.
Prad
Hi there. After reading your guide and everything, I still couldnt get Kies working. Then I stupled upon one single post regarding Microsoft Framework. I installed it, and straight away all problems went away - it wasnt any drivers or anything. U can get it here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx
Hope it helps everybody as it helped me! :)

Hi experts, I am facing a serious trouble with my new SGS.
When I connect SGS to KIES, it can’t recognize it, though it can recognize SGS when in ‘mass storage’ mode. In that case, it suggests (at upper right corner) to connect SGS in PC KIES mode. It means, KIES is recognizing SGS (as mass storage). Also, when I choose the option as PC KIES in my SGS (the 1st option), some times it shows that ‘connecting’ and some times it doesn’t show any message though the USB connection Sign is shown.
To resolve this, I followed the following steps:
First, updated KIES to the latest version (1.5.3.10093_82) after several tries.
Then, I ran the ‘driver recovery’ from KIES (from upper left pop-up menu). It completes the installation and the MTP driver issue is resolved (I mean, this msg is not shown anymore)
Then, I ran the ‘driver recovery’ again. This time, after installation, it tries to load/install the “PCI Simple communication controller” but failed. I tried several times but this problem exists.
Till buying, I couldn’t connect SGS to PC to sync. I badly need help for this problem.
My pc has windows 7 as OS.
Hi Tauheed.
I'm running windows 7 too, so I would strongly suggest that you install the MS Framework file (posted link in previous post). It will most likely let Kies and your SGS connect.

Guys can someone help me? First Samsung kies worked fine, but suddenly kies didn't see my phone. Installed kies again, and now when i connect to usb my phone asks what to do and i press Kies. Then my phone returns to homescreen?? How can i fix this?
Looks like version 1.5.3.10103_100 breaks it again. At least on Win XP 32-bit. Connecting...
Kies is FINALLY working for me (win 7 x64).
I tried the all of the solutions listed here, but none corrected the MTP/home screen flashing problem for me until I uninstalled Windows Media Player (Control Panel>Programs>Turn Windows Features off), uninstalled the i9000 drivers (for the 18,000th time), rebooted, connected SGS and waited for the drivers to finish installing, then started kies. All of that to find there are no firmware updates...soon, froyo, soon.
I haven't dared to disconnect and try again, I'm just gonna bask in the glory of having the useless software working for a bit.
I had read suggestings that WMP could be an issue, but only for Win XP. Figured I had nothing to lose.
Anyone have froyo installed yet?
Argee is right. Uninstall windows media player
I think im having same problem but not sure. i have read msot comments and the information above and it seems irrelevant. I have connected my phone to the computer. it saysd turn to pc kies mode. I do that and it doesnt read my phone. I can't even see my phone in my computer. so i go back to mass storage mode and i can finally see my phone/sd card. I then try to goto the drive, which i do and it says drive status, update drive ETC. but i cannot click update driver??? any suggestions?
update: i have come across the triangle on the device. i try to select the driver, i did that and still not able to get it connected vie kies mode.. im going to try and uninstall and install again
Arrghh I hate this phone?! Has stopped working again for no reason?! It simply just loops the 'MTP Application Initialising' screen over & over again.. any ideas (before I throw this piece of junk phone in the toilet!)
Thanks God the connection issues are solved. It becomes the single toughest pain.
Simply, admirable what you have done here. It is pleasing how to look you express from the heart and also your clarity by this significant content can be easily looked.
Fixed my issue with the Galaxy S (again!)
Ended up putting in a new SD card, formatting and voila.. it connects first time!! I'd recommend formatting the card as I've read issues with long filenames have issues with the MTP error.. I so wished SAMSUNG would fix their sh*t!
Sorry spoke to soon... it states 'Connected' on the phone but never actually connects within the KIES software.. hmmm confusing?!? Answers on a postcard please... Samsung won't be getting my monies again!
this phone is driving me crazy
spent all day trying to connect, searched the web, tried everything...nothing worked
my gf comes up, plugs in her phone, it connects right-away and everything works, would you believe that?
there must be something wrong with the (my) phone, i've try to get rid of the long extension files but can't even connect to the phone in storage mode (in order to delete the long files)
any tips?? (really bad dutch translation :) )
i mean any suggestions?
Thanks Lymond I will give that a go shortly! Shame you don't work for Samsung... they'd have sorted these issues by now if you was!
hi lymond
everything was the same, i guess, thing is, my phone was already experiencing more problems with apps that were running smoothly on hers
i think she's even a heavier user than me :), so i don't think it has anything to do with the applications
i can't check whether the versions are the same since she updated to froyo, or is there a way to 'see' older version of android (we both had 2.1, both had never done any updates)
Most definately, hopefully I can get this going cos I really do need this update! To make things worse, the Nexus One is getting 2.3 (or Gingerbread to you me) in a few days :-(
Next time i'll go with Google and buy their phone instead. Will let you know how I get on with the KIES software :-)
Gav,
I had that problem at one point too. See my post above about removing WMP. Haven't had a problem connecting since I did that.
Good Luck!
Congrats, Lymond! You didn't really expect it to go flawlessly, did you? ;-)
Impressions?
Thank you for such a great information i have the same phone which u have!
It wasn't getting connected to the comp but now its working and getting connected to the computer thanx for these instructions!
Superlike Hub!
First was the issue that device is searching for drivers and then it shows there is a problem occurred during the installation of drivers but its now getting connected.thanx!
Great Hub and the Information too!:-)
I've heard Froyo may come out for us tomorrow, but I'll believe it when I see it. No official announcement from the carrier yet.
As for the problems you noted, I found my GPS sometimes took a ridiculously long time to connect, so I'm thinking that won't be a disappointment for me. I've also noticed that, the last little while anyway, the home screen icons take a while to show up when I boot up. Hopefully it sorts itself out.
I'm interested to see how it does with battery life, if there is any difference at all. Yesterday, for example, I made 3 short calls, sent about 30 short emails and ran a news app a couple of times. After 3 and a half hours, I was down to 52%.
The other issue I'm hoping it fixes is the coma problem...
Valuable lesson for the day: Be sure Kies is selected on the phone before starting Kies on the computer. I'm back to the mtp/home screen flashing...
WOOHOOOOW!!!!!
I finally have froyo!!! I just installed the latest version of KIES on my girlfriends laptop with vista and it immediatly worked, without any hastle.
For the record, my windows 7 x64 desktop still doesn't work wioth KIES.
Anyway, greetings from the Netherlands:)
Gerben
That’s great! All issues have been solved. Like your work, thanks…
I have froyo too, Lymond, let's test it...
At first strike I have no connection problem.
The only issue is that outlook sync stops at 40 percent, I am trying now with MPE and with android-sync. Let me see, maybe is only a foolish like reboot, not yet done....
Yes, connection to wifi is much quicker and gps is much more accurate. taking a closer look with SGS tools, froyo has GPS settings like those suggested in many treads.
im trying to upgrade firmware but every time i try it comes up with this message
no response from server please check if your internet connection is activated and try again
and my net is connected so i dont understand any body please help i need froyo
Hey Flashlegs
if the software does not recognize the update, then you can follow these simple steps to force the upgrade to Froyo recognition. Let's see how:
First you should download this patch Kies here: https://rapidshare.com/files/430202779/Kies_Regist
Connect your phone to Kies and make sure the software detects the phone
Run Registry Patcher Kies, if you start it with Windows administrator rights
Click on the patch and then on the only item that appears
Then go to File> Backup Load
Select ITV file included in the package that you downloaded
Upgrade
Before performing this procedure, however, it is advisable to remove (if you have them) the root and the lag-fix from your Galaxy.
My Galaxy S was recognized by PC after the following:
1. Connect USB cable to phone and PC (phone will not be recognized and start blinking on MTP Application screen)
2. Press Home key
3. Pull the top slider down and press Turn Off button to unmount USB
4. Remove USB cable from your phone
5. Put the USB cable back
After all this steps, my phone was recognized...
This worked. Thanks!
I found another work around on mine. Same problem, wouldn't connect or install drivers. However, after formatting my internal sd card, it re-installed the drivers and connected first time. Same issue after disconnecting and re-connecting the usb cable though. After some more experimentation, I found if I deleted just the Android folder on the internal card it would work again everytime.
This allowed me (finally!) to update to Froyo through the software. Since the 2.2 update it has worked everytime it's plugged in without messing about. Hope this helps someone.
I'm on Vodafone UK by the way.... ;-)
Briliant. You saved my day. Thanks
i have bought samsung galaxy s T959 and downloaded samsung kies..whenever i connect my cell to my laptop in MTP mode..the phone shows that it is connected but the kies app doesnt support this cellphone...it says that the device is not supported...what should i do to update my t959 to android 2.2 froyo???i really need a proper answer plz help
Hello Everyone,
I have a problem with my connection in Samsung Choice with my galaxy s.
If i connect to my phone that's no problem i can see everything on my phone and can copy and do everything.
But when i want to download samsung app, the error show that cannot connect phone because google and the phone doesn't have samsung apps and a error with android os.
Can someone helpe me Please..
THanks..
Tried almost everything & nothing seems to work. Following your guide, I've got further than any other methods. It recognises the fault, I install the driver & All is ok. But I go to open Kiese & it reverts back to the same "this device cannot start (code 10). I phoned Samsung today & what a waste of time that was. Their rather rude & uninterested "Support" team member put me on hold for 10 mins just to tell me to re-install Kies. Joke. I think I may take the path of pestering Samsung every day untill they help me properly!
Thanks for the link Lymond. Re-installed USB drivers, Followed advice on Samsung's trouble shooting page about re-installing drivers. Still no success....hmm. Starting to annoy me now. Thanks for your help.
Also, It continues to give me error code 10. Argh!
My drivers were OK and the PC could see my Galaxy S when plugged in. The Phone would start up the MTP application, initialise, and would then indicate it was connected, but Kies remaining in the "Connecting the device" phase indefinitely.
But when I switched on USB debugging
– Main Menu >> Settings >> Applications >> Development >> (make sure “USB debugging” is checked), and then plugged in the phone, while the phone complained that USB debugging was incompatible with a Kies connection, Kies was suddenly able to see and connect to the phone.
I'm now in the midst of upgrading to Froyo.
I hope this helps someone else.
Lymond, I'm using Win 7 32bit. Should this be an issue?
A bit off topic here, but doe anyone know how to fix up the crappy microphone distortion problem when recording videos using the Galaxy S? This is a well known issue when recording videos when there is loud sounds such as music playing.
I was hoping, someone here might know how to adjust the mic settings to prevent distortion around loud sounds?
i select the correct folder for the driver to be installed from but it says that my driver is already up to date. still cant connect to kies with the same error "mtp device failed' device driver software was not successfully installed. please help
Lomo, I finally came across this which worked for me. Look for a post by PheonixFX who wrote a C# prog. Worked first time for me. It opens all files containing 16+ charactors.

Hope this helps others.

hi.thanks.Kies works properly after .NET 4 installation
No MTP error.Kies detecting the phone and firmware can be upgraded upgrade
no problem lymond.I am using windows 7 64bit OS.
Ok, I didnt read all the comments but would just share that went to samsung site, dowloaded drivers, installed on puter and presto, we are in business.
More than 3 hours of troubleshooting, reading through ur guides and other people comments again and again and finally solved my own problem which caused by using the wrong CABLE!!!!
Finally got Froyo. The newest version of Kies worked great for the update. When I went back to Kies today, however, I was somehow on the previous version again...
Hey Lymond,
I have a problem, after upgrading to froyo it goes well for a week, then I am not able to connect anymore, on any xp32 [home and work].
After connect the cable pc freezes, if disconnect it [PC] respond again. Surely is an USB issue, but...how to resolve?
Oh, on win7 pc I have no problem to connect.
Hey Lymond,
I did the same thing as you, but the devices still get disconnected after initially being connected.
I did exactly what you said, but it still ain't working. What should i do?
Dear Lymond,
Many thanks for the help you provided by writing this step-by-step instruction. Like many I also has the errors mentioned, but finally conquered them with your help. I was already planning to buy another phone, but glad that I can finally enjoy the best smartphone of this year.
Many thanks again. Like Gary already mentioned - you're a GENIUS! Greetings, Robin
factory reset.... I just did.... and it works fine... but still SKIES says MY PHONE CANNOT BE UPGRADE something! update 2.1 to proyo not working... dang!
USB problem resolved.
On phone micro usb connector, there is a small plate with connection and this was too close to external ground, maybe a false contact; simply moved little bit away with small screwdriver.
All OK now. Alternate problems with different pc due to different cables each time, but the problem was on phone connector.
hi lymond..im still using pentium 4 windows xp pro 2002 version..which bit or driver do i download for this old skool pc and what driver do i pick please ??
HA HA HA HA HA....
It's my turn now.
Cannot connect with PC.
Followed this guide from the beginning but no way to connect. No yellow triangle, unknown device popup message, no drivers installed. Obviously, drivers, kies, wmp, almos half pc software installed several times, from different package, ....nuts! A wasted mourning.
I use phone for work and pc connection is vital to share all data, I cannot start a day by guessing if I will have all my file or not....
OK, I will sell this junk phone [even if the bag is nice...] and try more luck with LG optimus 2x....
i was also facing the same problem but now it is resolved with your instructions .... thanks
somebody have connected galaxyS with kies via bluetooth?
If so please help me resolve "connection refused by device" problem.
While pc and phone are perfectly paired via bluetooth, kies can see the phone but nope, connection refused by phone... Incredible.
Cable connection does not work after froyo upgrading; (and I found the samsung cable to be defective, only by touching it the phone beeps but ok, buy a new cable!).... another shit is the usb port on the upper side, try to answer a call when you are n the car with phone connected to a charger...I will not be surprise to find a broken or defective usb port due to this extraordinary feature!
Incredible! I am very angry, about 500€ and eons of time wasted, trying to pair them, like putting a square in a round hole. A dummy software which only purpose is for marketing: goal reached.
Sorry for these confused opinions, I am very angry
Yes Lymond, I have take a look on LG, but motorola atrix seems to be little bit better on display but not on video recording. Let me think about them till february.
Thanks Lymond. I also had connecting issues with my Galaxy S and Kies but it is now connecting after installing the new driver
I have just found a solution to this problem on the Samsung Galaxy 580 (GT-5800).
I have Kobo (eBook reader) and its files have long names which for some reason the MTP driver does not like, I moved these files off the SD card and was able to connect.
This is not very convenient and I hope a solution can be found.
I hope this helps others

Hello,
Just to let you know that .NET 4.0 fixed my MTP error on Windows 7 64-bit
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx
Thanks!!
M
Hello,
Ah yes, I have the Galaxy S Fascinate from Telus.
Kies doesn't seem to be able to connect to the phone (indefinite connecting..), but Windows is 100% recognizing the phone.
Thanks!!
M
Hello Michael Clermont
I already have NET 4.0, but reinstalled, who knows...?
Nothing changes. Always unrecognized by windows. That's the big problem.
I should have a phone problem this is the only way I can explain why, once connected on car charger, my phone says "usb connected" !!! ?????
Thank you for the hints. I've just bought my Galaxy S today and the info here has been really helpful for me. Once again thanks and keep up the good work!
N.
Thankyou Lymond.
Already done weeks ago and now too, but no connection.
I will bring this disaster phone to service.
I have a different problem. I have installed the drivers and as a result i can now see my phone in kies. It says that it is connecting the device, and that i have to wait. my problem is that it stays this way to infinity. it never finishes connecting.
Kies tells me that i have the latest update, and device manager tells me that the driver is succesfully installed.
anybody have any ideas?
Hi,
Strange thing, for these having a Base System driver error (got Dell XPS M1530 Win 7 x64).. The problem might escalate, like killing 80% of the Dell drivers in device manager. Reinstalling the driver would cause an error.
I fixed that by removing Kies and the Samsung drivers. This is very weird... On my other computer (win 7 x64) I'm having the indefinite connecting problem, and now the phone doesn't want to initiate the USB prompt.
On my work computer, Windows XP x86 will not recognize the phone at all, saying that the driver installation failed and that I have an unknown USB composite device. Kies doesn't have a clue of what's happening on this computer (did recognize the debug mode at one point).
On my linux netbook, it accessed the phone without installing any driver. But sadly, Kies is not on linux.
I come to the conclusion that Samsung (phone division) really sucks when it comes to writing PC drivers. I never had a problem with their LCD & printers.
Go figure..
these guys know their stuff one try and my phone hooked up no problems
I used multiple things to solve this (installed custom drivers, .net4, hard reset). Nothing worked. Then after I plugged phone accidentally I selected kies, but kies wasn't running. And mtp drivers were installed without any problems and my phone was connected. Then I started kies and it found my samsung!
This worked for me:
Unmount all SD (internal and external) and connect to Kies. Instantly recognized my vibrant and then I updated to 2.2!
Hope this helps someone else who was struggling like me.
Updating to 2.2 right now using Kies. This is what worked for me:
1. Except for disabling anti-virus and firewall (I know Windows wouldn't survive long without these), followed instructions up to "Upgrade the device to KA6" step on http://forums.t-mobile.com/t5/Samsung-Vibrant/Sams
2. Kies closed. Follow http://forums.t-mobile.com/t5/Samsung-Vibrant/Vibr
3. Plugged phone in, let it install more drivers.
4. Unplug phone
5. Start following at "Upgrade the device to KA6" on http://forums.t-mobile.com/t5/Samsung-Vibrant/Sams
Trying to manually install the x64 driver didn't work. Windows claimed the driver was "up to date". I never got the "mtp usb device" driver to work (still has the yellow triangle).
Thanks everyone who posted answers!
Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit, ASUS CG5270
Running as an Admin (temporarily)
Upgrading from Android 2.1(T959UVJI6).
Thank you so very very very much
For the benefit of anyone else with Windows 7 64bit getting the 'Retrieving the COM class factory' error (as per alesmine above) when trying to sync their contacts with Outlook: I fixed this today by installing Synchronization-v2.0-x86-ENU.msi from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx (it's the last item on the Download list on that page). Hope this helps.
Windows 7 X64 Ultimate
Thanks for this. Also works for Galaxy tab. MTP error first - install Galaxy S driver - then W7 knows to go to find the correct driver and finds the GT1000 correctly!
Why it cant recognise the Tab first off I dunno, hey ho - good find!
Thanks man
install windows media player 10 and new version Kies . That did the trick for me.. On Microsoft Windows, MTP is supported in Microsoft Windows XP if Windows Media Player 10 or later versions are installed. Windows Vista has MTP built-in. Most MTP-compatible devices do not appear through drive letter assignment in Windows Explorer, instead they will appear as "devices" in Windows Explorer.
Helpful link and excellent instructions.
Had MTP (code 10 error) on Vibrant (T-Mobile) 2.1. The link you gave did not solve the MTP error at first but helped with debugging enabled. Kies mini upgraded the phone in debugging enabled.
Thanks
I m having problem when I want to connect my Samsung galaxy 5 with pc internet. It gives OS error while connecting 2 the internet via kies on pc. Help me.
Back again.
Today phone returned from service.
Perfectly repaired, connection OK at first attempt with kies and androidsync. Tryed several modes (debug, kies, mass storage), all perfect.
Frojo 2.2.1 runs fast, very well.
Ridiculously easy to fix issue once I got here!
Thank you!
Hi Lymond,
This thread has become the master of trying "solving MTP issues"
I get the MTP problem and I am not able to resolve it.
System - Win XP SP3, latest Kies SW 2.0.0.11032_12
Phone - Galaxy S, basic SW is Froyo
I have tried the following till now:
1. removing/installing Kies and the associated driver files
2. Remove all file names with more than 16 characters
3. Reset to factory default
4. Moved through all USB ports
5. Used the USB cable provided with the phone.
6. running umdf.exe - gives an error that I have a more updated file
The only way out is MyPhoneexplorer
I noticed that I when I use "MyPhoneexplorer" it sees more files than I see in Explorer. Still I want to use Kies.
Any other suggestions?

After few more hours, here is the solution.
I removed from the system libusb-win32
restart and everything ok.
You can add that to the list of solutions

Firstly, I'm not a tech head... just a dude who fiddles with computers... So this is fix is a little wordy and random like me...
but Kries opps, I mean Kies (using windows xp) is now synced with my Samsung galaxy s GT-19000.
Step one: make sure you have Kries 2.0.0.11032_12
My phone was contected through USB and the phone was in MTP mode for kies.
As, I gave up on anything working to fix this syncing issue.... I went to uninstall kries and for some reason I decided to goto add/remove software
instead of using the kies uninstall... While in Add/Remove, I noticed the driver itself was it's own program and had been installed (I'm thinking most problems for all lie here).
So I uninstalled the driver through add/remove software and left Kries 2.0.0.11032_12 installed
After uninstall was complete, I first used this older driver (trial and error ya know) found here:
x86 (32bit) version: http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/MOBILES/Samsung/S
x64 (64bit) version: http://drivers.softpedia.com/progDownload/Samsung-
but that didn't work either ( but, I'm not sure if that is a important step or not, to finally getting it working (it's just what I did) up to you if you do it)
then I used the build in Kies "install driver" utillity under tools...
Now goto device manager... ( Control panel --> system --> hardware tab --> device manager for you noobsters )
and you'll still see the yellow "!" is still there with the MTP driver under portable Devices...
not to worry... (though I did at first!)
now, right click the driver and choose update, then let MicroSoft help you find the driver,
so choose "yes this time only", then "choose install the software automactically...
after that... the magic should happen.... let me know if this worked out for ya! goodluck!
Hi there
and thanks for this very interesting thread
I have a Galaxy S I900 with FROYO.BVJP8
I could connect it to my home comp but a my office for some reason I get the MTP error no matter what I try.
So far it works only in mass storage mode, which is OK for photos or mp3s, but I'd love to use Kies or even Windows Media with my phone.
First, I have Windows XP Professional SP3 (32 bits)
Here's what I've tried :
- updating .net frameworks
- installing the latest kies version
- installing Microsoft Active Sync
- trying each and every USB port
- installing the above mentioned drivers manually using the right folders
but none of those solutions worked.
I don't like to give up, but now I don't know what to do..
Any suggestions ? thanks in advance
"Then i connected the usb cable to my pc (not the phone just the cable) turned off my phone, then connected and started the phone. Then it automatically turns in mass storage mode, installs some drivers. Then i reconnected using Kies mode on phone, it installed some more drivers and now it works great."
Hi Thijs,
Billions of thanks pal. I used to get connected to Kies from the day one. After a few months (May be after firmware upgrade to 2.2 or may be Kies upgrade to 2.0) the damn thing stopped connecting. Mass storage mode was fine. Kies always prompted that this is not the supported mode but in Kies Mode it kept "Connecting" perpetually.I tried every thing including factory data reset. All kinds of drivers- virtually every thing under the sun or in computer/on net.
Thanks to your magic Mantra Viola !!!! One click fix !!

I hate kies.
1. phone + kies worked fine, no problem.
2. uninstalled kies to upgrade it at the new version.
3. Nothing work now.
start all mtp procedure again, lazy, so tired. again.
4. I hate kies. No more samsung phones.
another thing yet.
I use kies only and xclusively for firmware update, as there are much better software for sync (android sync or my phone explorer).
If there is another way to upgrade firmware without kies, please post it.
I have the same issue. OMG I used to have LG gt540 optimus, and I had to the following steps to work with my PC:

A million SanX for your precious help!
I feel I have tried everything. I can't get my phone to connect with mass storage even. I get the message "device drivers was not successfully installed" I tried the steps in your post to install the driver. When I click to install it says "windows has determined the driver software is up to date". Yet it still doesn't work.
I've tried deleting all files > 16 characters, re installed kies, updating .net framework, tried every usb drive.
I've looked through other responses for hours with no luck. Please help.
Thankyou, excellent post.
same old thing, A Gio supposed to have an update firmware, but when you follow the steps given and at the last minutes, connection lost ? )~
you can connect to PC without Samsung KIES !
you need to do this: Settings > Applications > Development and turn on USB debugging.
now you will need the drivers and you will find the drivers here: http://ynos.ro/drivers/samsung/
Nice read. Do you have something for the Iphone aswell?
I did it.
Problems finished.
LG P920 3D.
Hello Lymond
There's no much to say: high end phone has a top hardware, every app runs smooth without problems, I give more importance to display. I think amoled still lead, galaxy S2 can be a good choice.
If you like imaging then choose a top camera, like sony or nokia.
If interested on 3d, actually there's no choice, LG P920 rules. I haven't seen evo3D, but all test on the net confirm LG on top about 3d.
About the phone itself I like a lot, there are not important lacks (like a bluff gps or mtp error on galaxy S). All seems to be good. About features there are a lot of stuff on the net, what you can't find is that it does not need a software like kies (only drivers, then you can see it as an usb memory), upgrades are downloaded directly on the phone via wifi when available.
If you want more detailed impressions, just ask
Thanks don't know how but it worked.
Dear Laymond.
thanks for guide, i have purchased Samsung Galaxy S and suffering from same problem.
but regret you have resolved only 64 bit window MTP problem, in 32, provided solution, not resolving the issue. Please look in to the matter.
Thanks
Hi I have a problem with wireless it seems like have a virus or something like that,,, when i i try to turn on the wireless ... error puts, i don't know what to do?? it's not working?
Thanks soooo much! This worked! Of course I got the CDC error as well - but I followed your advise. Cool. You were a blessing. Thanks again.
Hi Lymond,
Your steps were a great help just now! I installed the drive on windows 32 bit and it worked fine (though I ended up with an exe download rather than a zip file, and clicked on the exe to separately install the driver - not from device manager. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate.
Anyway, thanks for taking the time to write this up.
Cheers,
Madhu
tnx man you helped me a lot too your great !!
Latest samsung kies 2.0.2.11071_128 is not able to upgrade my phone GT-I5801 to PDA:JP6/PHONE:JP2/CSC:JP6(INU).
I'm totally FED UP! I've tried everything that I find but still can't fix the problem.
I was able to use kies once when I just bought SGS, but I had problem not being able to download stuff from market, so I Googled and factory reset my phone.
Now, new problem! Phone's connected with USB, Phone says "connected" and charging, but pc can't detect phone.
Btw I'm stuck after download x86 (32bit) version.
Help.
thank u so much
I can't sync my sumsung galaxy to my PC windows xp. do I need to download the driver?
It's been a long time since you've posted, but thanks a lot for the link to get the drivers, this worked for me today !
Three days ago I bought a Samsung Galaxy S 5.0 - an impulse purchase to complement my iPod Touch (a larger screen - easier to read).
I have now strayed into the world of Samsung Kies. GOD! What a nightmare! How do these people ever keep a job - let along sell mobile phones.
I have friends with Galaxy S phones. The Galaxy S II looks good. But how on earth do they manage with this non-functioning, incomprehensible software. (I understand that Galaxy Tab returns are running at seven times the rate of iPads - and I can quite understand why. If I can't get this thing to accept music and videos from either my MacBook or Windows 7 desktop or laptops, back it goes!)
thank u

Please Help me out to connect my phone to PC.
Firmware Over The Air upgrade is available at last. There is also now a MAC version of the dreaded Kies. I am not sure if it is safe to use it though.
I owned Galaxy S, a neverending story to connect it, and customers left completely alone with problems, as the more of you know. I owned HTC and nokia phones too and all connect well. Galaxy problems are too much. If you are reading this it means you are struggling yourself to solve something wrong that you haven't done, after have spent hundreds of $. Tell me why.
Ah ah ah I am happy with my LG P920.
Extremely happy. Following is something special, dedicated to galaxy owners: yesterday I have been advised directly by LG via email for a new android version (firmware update).
Phone can download itself updates with wifi or with PC. PC connection and data synchro never have had troubles.
Customer service? Donnow exactly, I havent investigate.
Probably it's due to product registration.
Anyway, I wanted to put a finger on different way to relate with customer.
Try updating to window media player 11.
thanks, mate! your post really helped me a lot! cheers!
I spent 5 hours trying to get my PC to recognise my i9000 galaxy. Wish I'd found this page first - would have saved 4 hours 50 mins! (I was not using the primary USB). Thank you for having all this info in one place.
Just want to add further advice: after the upgrade my phone was constantly crashing, wouldn't send texts and even struggled to make calls(!) I worked out one of my apps was incompatible with the new firmware. Fortunately it was on the SD-card and when I deleted it (using a card reader on my PC) the phone went back to normal. So, you should move all your apps to the memory card before updating the firmware.
Help i just installed new Kies 2.1.0.11112_41_7 and i want to connect through my SGS 2.3.5 Doctor ROM v8.1, but nothing error is confirm, SGS just running to MTP application and try to connect to my PC, but nothing happen, if i use mass storage mode is fine. I try for your suggestion but anything is normal on my PC, i try differrent action by ask to google, but nothing change, so can you please help me my friend....
I made it running once I plugged the tablet to usb-2 port ... if I use usb-3 (the fast one that SHOULD be backwards compatible), mobile mtp device driver failed to install ...
my problem is same as prasad......i own samsung galaxy fit and there's not any "usb settings" option in the phone!please tell me how to connect my phone to pc
thanks :)
changing usb ports helped me haha.
legend!
Without doubt the worst most infuriating piece of junk ever coded. Keis is the pits!!! Samsung should be ashamed to offer such a useless accompaniment to a masterpiece of mobile technology. Seriously not happy!!!
Karl - you're being too kind! I have had serious problems synchronizing Outlook 2007 calendar with Samsung Galaxy phone through Kies. Problems include: Randomly deleting appointments in Outlook calendar, removing categories from Outlook appointments, randomly moving appointments to different days, and the latest one - deleting exceptions to recurring appointments in Outlook and replacing them with the generic appointment from Kies. If maintaining calendars on two devices is important to you, Kies is NOT the tool!
Hi thanks for this help, spent hours trying and failing this really helped, id be interested to know how people feel about there galaxy now?? Im not impressed
Enjoy
